“Artistic talent is a gift from God and whoever discovers it in himself has a certain obligation: to know that he cannot waste this talent, but must develop it.”

PROJECTS IN HOUSTON, TEXAS

  • 1996, age 12: Began writing poetry.  My ELA teacher challenged our class to write a poem about peace, which she was going to collect from us and send to a local publication, The Greensheet.  My poem, "Peace", was chosen--my first published poem!

  • 1999, age 15: Created my first book, A Rose is a Rose is A Rose.  It was an anthology of my poems, and a birthday present for my friend, Payal Kapadia.  She was my first "fan" and actually asked for it as a present.

  • 2000, age 16: Founded the Poetry Club for my high school.

  • 2001-2002: age 17-18: Started the Teen Poetry Night program for the Houston Public Library at the Henington-Alief Regional Branch.  I created all the flyers which were sent to all the branches and local high schools.  Though not very popular, it did create and cater to a small, unique niche of teens who truly looked forward to the monthly event.

  • 2002: Named Poet Laureate for my graduating high school class.

  • 2004: Started sharing my poems at the Open Mic Poetry Nights at Notsuoh and Helios.  Recited them from heart, never read from a page.

  • 2006: Published my second anthology of poems, Caterpillars Don't Bite, but Ants Do Sting!, under my own company, Daedalus Press.  .

  • 2007: Published my third anthology, which began my Heart to Heart series.  It was a mixed media work of bookmaking, art, poetry and photography.  Each book was handmade.  I made 20 unique books.

  • 2008: Published my fourth anthology, Heart to Heart Vol. 2.  This was the "next level" from Volume 1: collaged, handmade books, but this time featuring the art and poetry of my peers.  It also included a CD and "audio magazine" element.  All recording and editing of audio material done by myself.  More mixing done by Mark Speer, and final mastering done by Ryan Edwards.  I made 30 unique books.

PROJECTS IN NEW ORLEANS, LOUISIANA

  • 2010-2013: Started publishing poems through Sandwich Zine, an online magazine.

  • 2015: Participated in the poetry reading at Buffa's, a part of Lady Fest and made a run of 10 books, which had all the poems I read that night.

  • 2014: Started attending poetry nights on Sundays with my friend / local librarian / mentor, Henri.

  • 2015: Collaborated with my student to create a book of her poetry, entitled Love My World.  We even organized a book release party.  We made a list of people to invite, made the invitations, and I brought refreshments.  I projected her book and she read her favorites to her guests.

Music

PROJECTS IN HOUSTON, TEXAS

  • 1995-2002: Began playing clarinet and formal music training via middle school and high school band.

  • 1999: Started my 1st band for the Kerr High School Talent Show.  We covered "Gigantic" by the Pixies.

  • 2000: Started my 2nd band, PunKtured Lung; I was the singer/lyricist.  We wrote a plethora of original songs.  We played for the Kerr High School Talent Show.  We also covered "It's the End of the World as We Know It" by REM at a local church talent show later that year.

  • 2001: Began playing bass clarinet.  Joined the Full Orchestra in addition to already being in Symphonic Band.

  • 2001: Auditioned for Region Band and got 10th chair out of 30 after only 3 weeks of playing bass clarinet!

  • 2002: Taught myself acoustic guitar and sang a cover of U2's "Ground Beneath Her Feet" at my 18th birthday debut, despite some discouragement from family.  I got rave reviews.

  • 2004: Taught myself how to play drums with strong support from my aunt.  Formed a band (as drummer) and 3 months later, played our first (and only) show at Super Happy Fun Land.

  • 2004: Began attending Nameless Sound classes and workshops (then called Deep Listening Institute).  This new approach of Deep Listening revolutionized how I played and revitalized my love for clarinet.

  • 2004-2008: Started becoming dedicated volunteer for Nameless Sound.  Attended numerous music classes, workshops provided by visiting musicians, working the door, the bar, setting up and breaking down shows, and even picking up visiting musicians from the airport and treating them to a good lunch upon arrival!  To this day, my "lunches" are still infamous and remain unforgotten by Nameless Sound and those musicians.

  • 2006: Learned basic keyboarding/piano skills from a college course.

  • 2006: Curated my first improvisational show for Nameless Sound as part of the They, Who Sound summer music series.

  • 2007-2008: Started my 4th band, Thunderbird--a 2-piece band in which I was the drummer.  My friend, Mark, was guitarist.  It was an instrumental neo-surf-rock band.  Wrote original songs and played numerous shows and even a friend's wedding.

  • June 15, 2008: Wrote my first musical composition: Order & Chaos.  Performed by 40 Primates, a group I organized specifically for the event: my 1st One-Woman Show.

  • 2010: Played a second One-Woman Show in which I recited poetry, performed improvised music (with special guest, my Nameless Sound teacher, Dave Dove), and performed songs on ukulele and one song a capella.

  • 2010-2012: played drums and was the FX hype woman for MC Perseph One.  With guitarist and long-time friend, Khrystah Gorham, we played many shows in Houston and Austin.  The most notable ones include opening for Aesop Rock twice and playing South by Southwest each year.

  • 2012: Invited back to Houston to play a show with other alumni for Nameless Sound's 10th Anniversary.

  • 2014: Performed "Kitchen Symphony" and "A Series of Mini Pieces" for Pauline Oliveros marathon performance at DiverseWorks.

PROJECTS IN NEW ORLEANS, LOUISIANA

  • 2009: Formed my 5th band, The Relax Family Band of New Orleans.  I sang, wrote lyrics, played drums, clarinet, bass clarinet, and eventually, the bass guitar.  We played numerous epic shows and became a staple band within the NOLA DIY scene.

  • 2010: Taught myself ukulele.  Recorded two covers: "Mt. St. Helens" by Mirah and "Pet Politics" by the Silver Jews.

  • September 4, 2011: Wrote my second improvisational composition, Red Stream, performed by Lunar Wreck, a group I co-founded with O.G. DIY legend and master potter, Osa Atoe, specifically for a No More Fiction show.  It was an acoustic, all-female, vocal/percussion only group.

  • February 14, 2012: Played bass clarinet, clarinet, and sang in the Kate Bush band for the New Orleans Community Print Shop V-Day Cover Show at the Allways Lounge.  We were the first band in the history of the Print Shop Cover Shows to have an audience desperately beg for an encore!

  • February 14, 2013: Played bass clarinet, bass guitar, and sang in the Smashing Pumpkins band for the New Orleans Community Print Shop Valentine's Day Cover Show.

  • 2013-2014: Played bass in Wet Habit, a short-lived DIY punk/metal band.

  • October 31, 2013: Play the bass and sing in the Shellac cover band for the New Orleans Community Print Shop Halloween Cover Show.  Clayton as Steve Albini on guitar and vocals, Andru Okun as Todd Trainer on drums, and yours truly as bassist Bob Weston, and singing sometimes.

  • Mardi Gras 2014: sang in the Heiress Band for the Heiress Parade.

  • Mardi Gras 2015: sang again in the Heiress Band for the Heiress Parade.

  • 2015: Mastered, produced, dubbed and printed 2009-2012, a cassette I made with my band mates in Relax Family Band.  It was a collection of all the original songs we created.  We had a tape release party at Alvar Public Library for their Garden Party / Zine Reading event.  We played in the children's section of course!

  • 2015: Also at the Garden Party / Zine Reading was local zinestress and artist Kate Lacour.  She asked me that day if I could play some background music to a projected zine reading.  Of course I said yes.

  • 2015: Played puppet music in a short play for NOCAZ Zine Fest.

  • July 2016: Wrote my third improvisational composition, Music is a Healing Force of the Universe.  Formed Spaceways, Inc., with James Kay (guitar), Tony (drums, french horn, sax, whale sounds on cassette), and myself on clarinets, vocals, overhead / digital projections, and space sounds on cassette. Dedicated to the healing of our society, especially victims of police brutality and injustice in any form.

  • December 5, 2016: Participated in Rob Cambre's Anxious Sound event: Mystery Sets! I would've played solo, but thankfully, electronics musician Corey Cruse and guitarist Rob Cambre signed up to play with me on clarinets / vocals, and improv group Team Pauline was born.

  • December 8, 2016: Played clarinets in an improv group at Gasa Gasa, organized by local saxophonist, Matthew Gooden.

  • December 21, 2016: Organized the first Troll Church, in honor of Pauline Oliveros.  She was a pioneer in improvisational music, composition and philosophy.  In honor of her Deep Listening approach, we meditate and play under the St. Claude Bridge in the Lower Ninth.  Also, it was dedicated to the Winter Solstice.

  • January 20, 2016: Second installation of Troll Church. A cathartic, meditative, prayerful set dedicated to us all on the eve of you-know-who's inauguration.

  • January 26, 2017: Played clarinets with Rafael Villanueva (guitar and vocals) and Max Boeckner (contrabass) at Euphorbia Kava Bar in Wheel of Fortune: Improv-Lotto Sets.

  • February 16, 2017: Played clarinets with Stoo Odom (bass), Rob Cambre (guitar), Matthew Gooden (saxophone), and Jay Steigner (percussion) for an Anxious Sound Thursday night set.

  • February 21, 2017: Played at Euphorbia again with Rafael and Max, this time to perform an improv set entitled Oddly Satisfying Happy Places.  It was an immersive experience with improvised music, audience participation, video projections, bubbles, balloons, a "red carpet" for our audience, and butterscotch candies.

  • March 9, 2017: Team Pauline opened up for Bad Luck, Fatplastik, and Salt at the Mudlark, this time with Eric Sie (bass) and Matthew Gooden, and myself on bass clarinet, vocals, smoke machine, and overhead / digital projections. Performed on the Vernal Equinox, themes explored were rebirth, spring, cycles, astronomy, menstruation, and awakening fulfilling one's full potential.
