I also found someone has developed a "fool-proof" method--at first, they memorize short passages from plays, then it dives into exploring Shakespeare's time period, his life, and unfolds from there...CLICK HERE to go to the website.
As soon as possible, I will purchase this book. This will definitely be a wonderful addition to my teacher toolbox.
I imagine a whole unit based on this, incorporating reading fluency, reading comprehension, history (social studies), theatre (art), and public speaking (social skills, communication/speech). I think I can even fit math in there--we can subtract the year Shakespeare wrote the play from 2014, for example. That would incorporate subtracting 4 digit/3 digit numbers with regrouping!
....and why stop there! We can even explore the science of that time, comparing what they used to believe and what we know now.
...and why stop there! We could even take it to the streets, making a whole production perhaps and presenting it at the Alvar Library, the Shadowbox Theatre or the Mudlark! We could have actors from the community, musicians from the community, and the music teacher help us with our production! Maybe we could incorporate other grades! The possibilities are truly endless!
Yes! My mind feels like a rocket gearing up for take-off...I know it's not easy, but the possibilities of such a far-reaching cross-curricular, arts-integrated unit just gets me so inspired!
